Due diligence for maintaining civilized standards
Whether we're talking about jobs, the economy, the media, government, families, neighborhoods, natural resources, or any issue of society, there's one standard in common:
People make arrangements to rise above living in chaos and brutality: we all have to eat, but unless we are criminals and warlords, we don't build societies that do it by
theft, fraud or force.
Civilized systems of employment, governance, technology, etc. therefore include ways to keep different interests from overwhelming and destroying each other and make some
arrangements of checks and balances, give and take or win win, to support and protect common interests.
We know that everyone tends to work for their own different interests and therefore common interests aren't necessarily fulfilled in any specific arrangement. E.g. unions
aim for getting better wages and conditions, corporations try to increase profits for themselves and their shareholders, and politicians keep raising large sums from various
interests in order to stay politicians.
There are often some differences in advantage, but if one group or individual has already won all the advantages and is still beating the
other when they're down, our own due diligence becomes necessary to check to see whether the civilized outcome we intended is still working.
