Cool Terms for Discussing Hot Issues

Part One | Widening Our Thinking | page 2 of 11

Principle 2 | Basic Categories

Examining and deliberating issues is exhausting, unless we have categories for what is included. They should be something that everyone can follow to find what's important to them and yet still see what's important to others. They should be as wide-ranging as possible, but simple enough to catch relevant factors in any events.

To use the metaphor of driving a car, we need to see the whole road to avoid having accidents yet not be so distracted as to cause accidents. If you prefer boats, we need to know where things are located on board, to find them quickly in an emergency.

Terms and principles for examining and deliberating issues and actions will be viewed in this guide in three basic categories:

  1. contexts of issues
  2. standards of how we evaluate issues in contexts, and
  3. patterns which apply across contexts and standards.

We will next examine each category separately.
